Ubuntu-loaded PCs from Dell are here but are they that much cheaper than the comparable Windows system?

Now that Dell has released its Ubuntu-preloaded desktop and notebook PCs, there are two questions to answer – firstly, how much cheaper are Ubuntu systems over their Windows Vista counterparts and secondly, just how much is Dell charging consumers for a Windows Vista license.

So we decided to look at Dell’s pricing and build three equivalent Windows-based systems to match the new Ubuntu-preloaded offerings to see what we could save.

Ubuntu Prices are much lower... ... in one case nearly 200 bucks cheaper out of a 500 dollar (ubuntu) and 700 dollar (vista) machine..

funny thing is that the Ubuntu box runs faster.. much faster...

People always say that Ubuntu is faster than Vista, but to be honest I couldn't see any difference myself, I am running Vista Home Premium and Feisty Fawn as dual boot on my AMD64 X2 5600+ 2GB and I can't see any speed difference. Initially I had problems with Vista concerning compatibility issues and availability of drivers but now it is running very smoothly, but there are also issues with Ubuntu such as not working monitor resolution.

The speed thing is up for debate, I'd like to see a minimalist Linux version that can emulate a Direct X / Windows 32 or 64 environment but I doubt it will happen that easy.

And if you are looking to save money make a PC yourself or get someone you know to get you one, then get a bootleg XP and you save yourself probably 300-1000$ depending on how good of a computer you get.

Microsoft doesn't care anyway about cracked Windows, as long as they have the market share

try xubuntu as the install rather than the standard Ubuntu.. it uses less resources ... and IS much faster... but it doesn't have all the eye candy.. like moving icons and stuff...
