Kecksburgpa In a victory for UFO enthusiasts, NASA has agreed to search for documents related to a mysterious incident that the government has tried to downplay -- or, some would say, cover up -- for decades.

On the night of December 9, 1965, a sonic boom-causing "fireball" streaked across North American skies before crashing in the woods near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania. The military promptly swarmed area, hauling Volkswagen bus-sized object away to an Air Force base in Ohio.

The Pentagon subsequently insisted that it was a meteorite, but fought tooth-and-nail to keep the information secret, drawing the ire not only of UFOlogists but public figures like John Podesta. In 2003, a NASA official told a Sci Fi channel documentary team that the object could not have been a satellite -- then, in 2005, NASA announced that the object was in fact a satellite.

NASA's decision to re-open its files is the latst phase of a legal battle prompted by journalist Leslie Kean's Freedom of Information Act request, filed in 2003 and subsequently fought by the space agency. In March, a judge rejected NASA's request to have the case thrown out of court.
