my first thought was led lights in a model of some kind but from what ive read some witnesses are saying it was as big as a 747 so that kind of rules out my toy kite theory. could it be projected somehow?

That was my first thought, and then I remembered the mirages, but the chinese ones were in daylight so that theory is out. (I think)
