Hemp is also a threat to the cotton industry, you are correct.

Hemp has many, many, many uses from being a more durable fiber then cotton, to a replacement to crude in the creation of plastic, to pulling heavy metals out of the ground (at strip mines sites and such) and replacing soil nutrients as part of a crop rotation (to name a few). (And yes, pot has many uses too).
It is a absolutely shameful that these plants have been largely demonized and made illegal by industries and companies that would rather not have a 'natural' plants as prime competition.
But then just about anyone can grow hemp or pot. And there is just no money in that.
