WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) indicated in interviews secretly taped by a friend before he became president that he had used marijuana but would not admit it for fear of setting a bad example for children.

Portions of the tapes, recorded from 1998 to 2000 by author Doug Wead without Bush's knowledge, were aired on ABC News on Sunday and published by The New York Times. Their authenticity was verified by the media outlets but has not been independently checked by Reuters.

"I wouldn't answer the marijuana question. You know why? Because I don't want some little kid doing what I tried," Bush purportedly says on the tape.

I'm sorry, guess I am not seeing the point of the post. First point: a friend secretly taped him?? Some friend...with friends like that, who needs enemies? Second point: Seems to me that if this is true, not only did he admit it, but he also recognized the error of his ways. Third point: And this is different from Bill Clinton how? Oh wait, that's right...he didn't inhale. The fact of the matter, is both presidents were wrong, but, let he who is innocent, cast the first stone. I think we all recognize that both of these men grew up in an era where free love, drugs, etc were rampant, and very much commonplace. I don't think their actions were appropriate, but before we point fingers, let's make certain they aren't pointing at ourselves, first.

He was speaking about Gore's admittance to smoking marijuana, and was speaking to what he would have done in Gore's position. There is very little that would suggest the President himself was admitting to smoking marijuana in what has been released so far. I'm not saying he didn't, but this taped conversation is nothing.

Examine what he says, and keep in mind he is talking about Gore admitting to smoking marijuana.

If the question before Bush's response was 'what would you have done if you were in Gore's position' Bush's answer makes complete sense and would in no way indicate it was an admission of smoking pot.
