TORONTO (AFP) - A lone gunman shot and killed four Canadian police officers Thursday on a remote farm in the western province of Alberta being used to illegally grow marijuana, police and local authorities said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said four of its officers armed with handguns were guarding the suspected growing operation after an overnight raid when they came under fire from a suspect using a high powered rifle.

The suspect, who appeared to be acting alone, was later found dead at the scene of the incident, which television pictures showed was a large corregated iron barn near the town of Mayerthorpe, 130 kilometres (80 miles) northwest of Edmonton.

Police would not say if he took his own life or was killed by one of their officers, citing an ongoing investigation.

I would like to see how this one turns out... I'm curious about how the man with the "high powered" rifle managed to get killed, yet still managed to wipe out all four officers with handguns... Why would he kill himself after wiping them out (lol, even to someone crazy, this serves no purpose)? Or how would a handgun bullet reach a man who wiped out three of your buddies from quite a distance (in the dark) while still managing to kill you, make it the intended (general direction) target with any accuracy? Those darn journalists never give you enough information...

He was using a high powered assault rifle. He managed to kill 2 officers from a distance, wounding the other 2, wounded himself as he shot them dead. Then he committed suicide.
And it wasn't a drug raid as the headline says. They were investigating a stolen vehicle. They managed to stumble on 20 marijuana plants during this process.
