TORONTO (AFP) - A lone gunman shot and killed four Canadian police officers Thursday on a remote farm in the western province of Alberta being used to illegally grow marijuana, police and local authorities said.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said four of its officers armed with handguns were guarding the suspected growing operation after an overnight raid when they came under fire from a suspect using a high powered rifle.
The suspect, who appeared to be acting alone, was later found dead at the scene of the incident, which television pictures showed was a large corregated iron barn near the town of Mayerthorpe, 130 kilometres (80 miles) northwest of Edmonton.
Police would not say if he took his own life or was killed by one of their officers, citing an ongoing investigation.
