This raises several questions, like why is the US following the Roman Empire Example that failed? This exact reason was noted as ONE of the reasons for the Roman Downfall, as the non-Citizens were not as willing to fight to defend the Roman Homeland.

It's just slightly unsettling... I felt like I was reading a 2000 year old press release when seeing that story.

The Roman Empire used literally the same tactic.. I don't see how this will be successful.

They, as most Americans, dont read history books. The only books we read are Stars and People magazines.

Founder, the US is nothing like the Roman Empire. Yes, we are using more foreigners in the Army. But, at least these people are trying to become productive citizens through the proper channels. Sometimes, people take for granted how GREAT America really is. People would risk their lives to have a chance to be an American. As much as some on SQLSPACE despise America(and our foreign policies), this is truly the best country in the world. And do you really think that we would need outsiders to protect us from invaders? Every Red-neck, gun-toting American would have a field day on invaders. IMHO.

This is old news in a historical sense. I believe the North Federal armies did this during the civil war, immediately drafting the poor Irish immigrants off the boat. *Their chances of survival would have been a whole lot less in that war. And I believe that was one of the major issues that culminated in the 1863 draft riots in New York.

However with the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; I agree they seem to draw more of a Roman comparison.

As well would be every college educated computer geek like myself.

But that isn't the point I am trying to make, the point is that this literally was a 'one off fluke' at one point in Roman History that turned into a normal process.

I do not actually disagree with it, these immigrants are willing to take a bullet to save this country... they deserve citizenship.

I am just pointing out that there is a distinct parallel between this News Story, and a very similar one from 2000 years ago.
